Format
Pre-recorded video interview — competency and motivational questions before the assessment centre invite
Types of Questions
Competency-based: “Tell me about a time you showed integrity.”
Motivational: “Why EY? Why this programme?”
Situational: “What would you do if you disagreed with a decision your manager made?”
Commercial: “What challenges do you think EY faces in the next 12 months?”
The STAR Framework
S — Situation: Set the scene briefly (1–2 sentences). Enough context, no more.
T — Task: What was your specific responsibility? What was expected of you?
A — Action: What YOU did — not "we". Be specific. This is 60% of the answer.
R — Result: Quantify if possible. What changed? What did you learn?
Recording Tips
- Record a practice answer on your phone and watch it back — fix filler words and posture
- Look at the camera lens, not your own face on screen — it reads as eye contact
- Use your prep time to structure your answer (Situation → Task → Action → Result), not to write it word for word
- Speak slightly slower than feels natural — the recording will sound more measured
- Quiet room, good lighting, plain background — technical setup matters more than you think
What gets candidates rejected at this stage
Answers that describe what “the team” did. Vague outcomes (“it went well”). No genuine reflection on what you learned. Generic “Why EY” answers that could apply to any employer in the sector.
